Planning a Lake Tahoe Wedding
Saying your Vows Close to Heaven

Nestled more than 6,000 feet above sea level, the waters of Lake Tahoe (highest lake of its size in the United States) are as blue and pure as the heavens they reflect. The peaks of the Sierra Nevada surround the lake like an angelic choir draped in layers of snowy veils. If there is such a thing as a natural cathedral, a great outdoor church, it’s Lake Tahoe. No wonder couples come from all over the world to say their vows in this scenic sanctuary.

Because of its growing popularity for destination weddings, creative couples and wedding service providers have invented quite an assortment of ways to get married at Lake Tahoe.

Let’s take a look at a few:

Nautical Nuptials

Couples who claim they could “live on the water” may wish to marry on its gentle swells. Imagine your wedding album filled with breezy, sun-drenched images of you and your wedding party sailing across one of the nation’s most beautiful mountain lakes.

Rental yachts of all sizes are available at Lake Tahoe and, depending on the size you choose, can serve as floating wedding chapels and open-air reception halls. The vessels can facilitate your affair either docked or launched as cruising rehearsal parties, bachelor/bachelorette parties, receptions and even honeymoon suites. Your own minister can officiate, and in some cases, the ship’s captain can perform the ceremony.

Your Lake Tahoe water-themed wedding can also double as a popular destination vacation for your guests, enabling you to plan a wedding, honeymoon and guest vacations, all at the same time. Hence, you can say your vows, wind in your face, sailing into married life, leaving water-happy guests in your wake.

Brides on Skis

Are you dreaming of a white wedding? Winter themed weddings at Tahoe can produce some of the most beautiful, world in white photography, not to mention ski-happy guests. Picture a handcrafted sleigh, pulled by Belgian Draft horses transporting the bridal party, who, inspired by the area’s crystalline quality, planned a Dr. Zhivago style wedding.

There have been many adaptations of the Tahoe winter theme wedding. At one, the bride, groom and guests skied, cross-country, through scenic meadowlands to the lakeshore. At another, a highly spirited wedding party on snowmobiles roared to the mountaintop where they enjoyed a BBQ reception. Tahoe even has ministers who ski. “We will ski with you to a spot of your liking” say Rev. John and Lynn Spinola and, they add, “We supply our own lift tickets.”

Whether you choose to snowboard, ski, tram or airlift your way there, you will be saying your vows a little closer to Heaven. There is nothing left to do but kiss the bride, hold hands and ski down the mountain together as your first married act.

There are many creative ways to wed in Tahoe, i.e., hot air balloons, golf, holistic therapy and Celtic culture are but a few of the available themes. Lake Tahoe has a host of knowledgeable wedding coordinators waiting to help you plan every beautiful and creative detail of your special day.
