Contiguous File Allocation

The Problem

As we talked earlier when we discussed defragmentation, not all parts of a file are stored in the same location, which slows down computer speed.

 

The Solution

Increasing your contiguous file allocation might be useful if you work with large files.  XP keeps a pointer to all the different parts of the file and retrieves it when needed. Retrieving  larger files can be speeded up if more of the file was stored contiguously (in the same location on your hard drive.)

 

The Method

Follow the instructions below to increase the contiguous file allocation size:

 

  1. **Download this file**. When the window gives you the option to Open/Save, choose Open, by Left Clicking.
  2. When you select Open, you will see a screen a similar to the one shown below. Click Yes.
