Indexing Service

The Problem
The search for files (or the occurrence of a particular word or phrase within a file) can be very time consuming with today's larger hard drives.
A process called Indexing Service helps in reducing this time. This might seem very useful, but in order to use it, XP has to manually go through all your files and do some periodic organizing. The problem is, this organizing process might begin when you least expect it and suddenly you will notice a tremendous slow-down in your computer's speed for no apparent reason.

The Solution
By default, the indexing service is turned off but you might want to double check this option on your computer to be sure.

The Method
Follow the steps below to make sure the indexing service is turned off.

 

  1. Left Click on Start. When the new window opens, Left  Click on Settings and then on Control Panel.
  2. Double Left Click on Administrative Tools
  3. Double Left Click on Services. You will see a screen similar to the one shown below.

 

 

  1. Look for Indexing Services and double left click on it. You will see the screen shown below.
     

 

  1. Click Stop if the Service Status shows Started.
  2. You can permanently turn this service off  by Left Clicking on the down arrow of the Startup Type field and selecting Disabled.
  3. Click OK.
