Large System Cache

The Problem

Your computer runs or operates programs more quickly if a larger portion of the needed information is stored in a cache, instead of your hard drive. Sometimes these cache areas are not used to their greatest potential. This tweak will only be useful if you have more than 320MB of RAM (stands for Random Access Memory.)

The Solution

Your windows registry can be adjusted to maximize the use of your available RAM, a temporary storage area for data.

The Method

First, find out the amount of RAM your system has by following the steps below.

Locate the My Computer icon on your desktop or from your Start Menu and Right Click on it.

Select Properties by Left Clicking. You should see a screen similar to the one shown below.

The last line tells you the amount of RAM in your computer. If it is more than 320MB you will be able to further improve the performance of your computer by using a larger cache. A larger cache helps in storing more information in your RAM. XP has a mechanism whereby it transfers already used information back to the hard disk. Using a larger cache, we can reduce this transfer in case the information needs to be used again.

Now follow the steps below to improve your performance with the help of a larger cache.

  1. **Download this file**. When the window gives you the option to Open/Save, choose Open by Left Clicking.
  2. You will see a screen a similar to the one shown below. Click Yes.
