The Problem
The
more programs you have loading up when Windows starts, the slower it
performs and the longer the boot up
process
The Solution
"MSConfig" is a little known utility which
is included free with XP. It will help you select which
programs/applications you
want your
computer to automatically load during the boot
up process. The other advantage of MSconfig is
that it will remove most Spyware, Trojans, dialers, viruses and other malicious
programs that have sneaked onto your system.
The Method
Follow the steps below to start
using the MSConfig Utility
2. Type msconfig and press Enter. You will be able to see the window below.

3. Click on the Startup tab at the top. You should now be able to see a screen similar to the one below.

4. In Windows XP, all of the essential programs are loaded through something called Windows Services. This means that almost all of the startup items listed under the Startup tab are completely optional and can be turned off.
5. Press the Disable All button to deselect everything on the list (don't worry, this won't harm your computer in any way and you can always turn anything back on again at a later date)
6. Scroll down the list and check (enable) the following items:
- Antivirus Software: (if you have any)
Use your common sense when finding this. It will have a name such as antivirus, Antivir, AV, Norton, AVGENT etc..... also if you're still not sure, try enlarge the window so the Command column can give you more complete info on each item. For Example: My antivirus software is called 'AVPersonal', in the Startup Item column it is labelled 'AVGNT' and in the Command column it reads: 'C:\Program Files\AVpersonal\AVGNT.EXE'
- Firewall: (If you use one)
If you use the firewall built into XP, it will load through another process called 'windows services' and will not appear in this list!
- Printer And/Or Scanner (if you use a printer /scanner)
Please note: Some printers/scanners won't have startup software but make sure you look anyway. Again, use your common sense when finding these. Enlarge the window until you can read all of the text under Command.
7. Now click OK
8. A small box will appear, click the Restart button.
9. When your computer restarts, a message will appear entitled System Configuration Utility. Check the box Don't show this message when Windows starts and click the OK button.
