Another Kind of Easter Egg:

When the creators of art, TV, movies or even computer software put secret, "insider" features into their work it's affectionately called an "Easter Egg". They gave it this name because you have to either know where it is, or hunt for it.

Here are three "Easter Eggs" in Leonardo da Vinci's portrait of the Last Supper.

The Romantic History of Those Remarkable  Faberge Eggs

egg07.jpg (20525 bytes)

Easter was a great time in Russia in Czarist days. Everybody kissed everybody else, and said: "Christ is risen"; receiving in reply the words: "Verily He is risen"; and everybody gave everybody else a present.

When the artist Faberge proposed to Emperor Alexander III that his Easter gift for the Empress should be an egg with some surprise inside it, the Czar was mystified.

Faberge produced what was, to all appearance, an ordinary hen's egg, containing a series of "surprises" wrought in gold and platinum, precious gems and enamel. The Czar was so pleased that he gave Faberge a standing order for an egg every Easter, and a bargain was struck between the Emperor and Craftsman.

The agreement was that each egg must have some surprise inside. During the lifetime of Alexander III only one egg was made each year, and this the Czar gave to the Czarina Marie Feodorovna.

A Week Of Easter

Easter is a week long, (Sunday to Sunday) Christian holiday celebrating the last days, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It culminates on Sunday with Resurrection Day.

Palm Sunday:
eastjerusalem2.jpg (22252 bytes)

This is the day when Jesus rode triumphantly into Jerusalem where he was greeted by a cheering crowd. The Gospel of Matthew says,
"Most of the crowd spread their garments on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. And the crowds that went before him and that followed him shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"

Holy Monday & Tuesday:

Monday, Holy Week is not a major feast. The cleansing of the temple of Jerusalem is thought to have taken place on this day.  Jesus overturned the tables of the moneychangers saying,  " It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you make it a den of robbers".

Tuesday, Holy Week is the day when the qustioning of Jesus is thought to have taken place. The Pharisees tried to trap Jesus into making a blasphemous remark.

Spy Wednesday:

On Wednesday, the tempo of Holy Week increases. This is the day known as "Spy Wednesday," when Judas Iscariot, a disciple turned betrayer, agreed to show the chief priests where they could easily capture Jesus.

Maundy Thursday:

Thursday, Holy Week is associated with the Last Supper. This day is known as Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday. It is the day before the crucifixion.
eastsupper2.jpg (13230 bytes)On this day Jesus ate his last supper with his disciples. The Gospel of Matthew says, "Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it , and gave it to the disciples and said, 'Take, eat; this is my body.' And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, 'Drink it, all of you; for this is my blood which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

eastcrucifixion2.jpg (14160 bytes)Good Friday:

Friday, Holy Week, called "Good Friday," is the day Jesus was crucified at the top of a hill called Calvary. Christians believe that Jesus sacrificed himself for the sins of the world.

Christians believe that by dying, Jesus accomplished a reconciliation between God and man. Accordingly, the crucified image of Jesus or the Cross itself, came to be regarded as the main symbol of faith for Christians.

Easter Eve:

The day following Good Friday is Holy Saturday. This is usually called Easter Eve.
