International Women’s Day

A brief history:

On  March 8, 1857 women working in clothing and textile factories (called 'garment workers') in New York City, in the United States, staged a protest. They were fighting against inhumane working conditions and low wages. The police attacked the protestors and dispersed them. Two years later, again in March, these women formed their first labor union to try and protect themselves and gain some basic rights in the workplace.

On  March 8, 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter work hours, better pay, voting rights and an end to child labor. They adopted the slogan "Bread and Roses", with bread symbolizing economic security and roses a better quality of life.

Today is
International....

woman.jpg (9738 bytes)Some say -- Women's Day

Some say -- Working Woman's Day

Some say -- Business Woman's Day

But whatever you call it, celebrate it. Go out to lunch or, perhaps, even ask your boss for a raise..

Go girl, it's your day.

Here is an interesting juxtaposition -- tomorrow, March 9, is Barbie's Birthday.

Check out this artist's customized version of Barbie...

It's a meaner, not so gentle version of Barbie.

(The artist is selling her on Ebay)

It's "Borg Barbie"

Complete with detachable arm and three exchangeable eyes.

According to Borg Barbie --
"It's fun to assimilate."

Perhaps she should be called "Corporate Barbie."

Happy Birthday Barbie... You've come a long way baby!

What will they
think of next?

1. Car must-haves:
Keep a make-up and trinket box in your car for quickly upgrading work look to going-out look. Also, always keep a pencil and pad in your bag, ready to jot down things you suddenly remember to do.
2. Find a bank near your office:
This can save you a lot of time. Also get to know a customer-service manager personally (so that you can call instead of going yourself) to get paper work done, especially at financial year-end when everyone's busier than usual.
3. Fix a date to pay bills:
Schedule to pay electricity, telephone and other bills on a fixed date, every month. Also spend this time attending to general financial matters.
4. Learn to deal with time bandits:
There are people who you know will call or hang around your desk endlessly, sucking up precious time. Learn to handle interruptions at work politely but firmly.
5. Don't get taken for granted:
Decide your working hours and let friends, relatives and work associates know what these are. Stick to them with discipline.
6. Keep home and office work separate:
Both areas of your life are demanding but try not to let them interfere with each other. Learn to switch off office work when you get home. And vice-versa. This will de-stress you and will save you considerable time.
7. Invest some initial time in organization:
Spend one morning organizing all household supplies like towels and bed sheets, cutlery, crockery, tools, even scissors and scotch-tape. Find a place for everything and put everything in its place. This single habit can save you lots of precious time.
8. Get family to pitch in:
Invest a little time into teaching family members to do house jobs quickly and well. Then get out of their way. And let them take responsibilities.
9. Double up on some tasks:
Have your washing machine on while you cook or clean. Clean out messy drawers while listening to music. Or watch a show on TV while you wait for the microwave to beep.
10. Use your fridge as a filing cabinet:
Categorize compartments in the fridge and stick to them: milk, yogurt and chocolates in one section; veggies and fruits in another. It will help you not to waste time hunting for what you want and will make cleaning easier for you.
11. Don't live in rewind:
Start the day with a clean slate, put yesterday firmly out of your mind. Always remember a fresh, open mind is a good tome manager.
12. When you're too busy do nothing:
When you're specially stressed out, you need to take time off to do nothing. Unwind and listen to your body's signals. It may be telling you that you can recoup your energy only by doing nothing at all for a while.
